In the beginning of the seeking journey it’s “accurate enough” to say we "identify with thought." But with a little bit of meditation (and/or perhaps psychotherapy) it's common for a person to gain "distance" from thought; that is to no longer “identify with thought” in total; to begin to see thoughts as merely thoughts.
